The 7-Step Audit Process
1. Baseline your annual consumption — Sum 12 months of gas and electricity in kWh. Convert gas from m³ if needed using our gas to kWh converter.
2. Compare to benchmark — A well-insulated European home uses 60–120 kWh/m²/year for heating. Above 180 kWh/m²/year signals a poor envelope. Above 250 kWh/m²/year is emergency territory.
3. Hunt phantom loads — Use the smart plug on TV, router, game consoles, printers, coffee machines. Any device drawing over 5W idle wastes €12+/year each. Try our standby power audit for the fast version.
4. Draft-hunt with incense — Slowly move a lit stick around windows, doors, electrical outlets, and attic hatches. Smoke movement reveals air leaks. Do this on a windy day for best results.
5. IR-scan walls in winter — Cold spots on interior walls reveal missing insulation. Aim for less than 2°C difference across a wall. Corners over 4°C colder than the wall centre signal serious thermal bridging.
6. Audit water heater and boiler settings — Water heater at 60°C not 70°C; boiler flow at 55°C not 70°C for radiators (except during coldest week of the year).

When to Call a Professional Instead
A blower-door test (€200–400) is worth paying for if you're planning major renovations, considering a heat pump (see our heat pump savings guide), or your DIY audit reveals unusual heat loss you can't locate. Thermal imaging surveys (€150–300) similarly excel at finding hidden problems inside wall cavities. For homes built pre-1970 without prior renovation, a professional whole-house energy assessment (€400–700) usually pays for itself within 12 months.
Auditing Before Solar or Heat Pump Investment
This is critical: NEVER install solar or a heat pump before doing an audit. Both technologies are sized based on your current consumption.
