How many kWh is 1 m³ of natural gas?
On the UK grid: ≈10.97 kWh per m³ (calorific value ~39.5 MJ/m³ × correction factor 1.02264). US pipeline gas averages ~10.55 kWh/m³. Your bill states the exact calorific value used for the billing period — override the default below to match it.
How many kWh is 1 therm?
Exactly 29.3001 kWh. A therm is defined as 100,000 BTU. Therms are standard on US bills; the UK moved to kWh in 2002 but older meters still report ft³.
Why does the calorific value change?
Natural gas is a mix of methane, ethane and inert gases whose ratios vary by field and season. National grid operators publish a running average calorific value; UK Xoserve values fluctuate 38–41 MJ/m³. The default here (39.5 MJ/m³) is the mid-point.
What CO₂ factor should I use?
DEFRA 2024: 0.183 kg CO₂/kWh for natural gas burned in a residential boiler (well-to-tank + combustion). This tool defaults to 0.202 kg/kWh which is the combined direct + upstream methane leakage figure many national inventories now prefer.
