It depends entirely on your grid. Norway: about 20 g CO₂/kWh (mostly hydro). France: 60–90 g (nuclear-heavy). UK: 180–250 g. Germany: 350–450 g. Poland: 650–750 g (coal-heavy). US average: about 380 g. Use your national grid operator’s live data for accuracy — the difference across countries is more than 30×.
What is a typical household carbon footprint?
European average: 6–10 tonnes CO₂e per person per year. US average: 15–18 tonnes. Global average: about 4.7 tonnes. To align with a 1.5 °C climate pathway, individual footprints need to reach roughly 2 tonnes/year by 2030.
Is beef really that much worse than chicken?
Yes. Poore & Nemecek (2018): beef averages 60 kg CO₂e per kg of edible product; chicken 6–10 kg; pork 7–12 kg; lentils under 1 kg. Beef’s footprint is roughly ten times chicken and 60 times lentils per kg, driven by methane from ruminant digestion and feed conversion efficiency.
How much CO₂ does a flight produce?
A short-haul economy flight emits roughly 150–250 g CO₂e per passenger-km including radiative forcing. Long-haul is slightly lower per km (200 g). A return London–New York flight is 1.5–2 tonnes per person — often more than a year of home electricity in Europe.
Are EVs really cleaner than petrol cars?
Over a typical 15-year lifetime, yes — even on today’s European grid mix, EVs emit 40–70% less CO₂ per km than petrol equivalents when manufacturing is included. In grids under 300 g CO₂/kWh, EVs pay back their manufacturing emissions within 15,000–30,000 km. In coal-heavy grids the advantage narrows but does not disappear.
