Understanding Fuel Efficiency Units

There are three main fuel efficiency measurements:

• **MPG (Miles Per Gallon)**: Used in USA and UK (but with different gallon sizes!) • **L/100km (Liters per 100 kilometers)**: Used in Europe, Australia, and most of the world • **km/L (Kilometers per Liter)**: Used in Japan, India, and parts of Asia

The key difference: MPG measures distance per fuel (higher = better), while L/100km measures fuel per distance (lower = better).

Because mpg and L/100km are inverse relationships, the conversion uses division rather than multiplication:

To convert MPG (US) to L/100km: L/100km = 235.215 ÷ MPG. For example, 30 MPG = 235.215 ÷ 30 = 7.84 L/100km. To convert L/100km to MPG: MPG = 235.215 ÷ L/100km. For example, 8 L/100km = 235.215 ÷ 8 = 29.4 MPG.

US Gallons vs UK Gallons

A common source of confusion: US and UK gallons are different sizes!

Important Difference

US gallon = 3.785 liters UK (Imperial) gallon = 4.546 liters This means UK mpg is about 20% higher than US mpg for the same efficiency! Example: A car rated 40 US mpg = 48 UK mpg
