Temperature conversion is uniquely complex because the three main scales — Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin — do not share a common zero point or degree size. Converting requires both multiplication and addition (°F = °C × 9/5 + 32), unlike most unit conversions which use simple multiplication. Celsius and Kelvin share the same degree size but are offset by 273.15 degrees. Fahrenheit degrees are smaller (5/9 the size of Celsius degrees), which gives Fahrenheit more resolution for weather temperatures — a useful property for distinguishing comfortable indoor temperatures. All three scales intersect at −40, where −40 °C = −40 °F exactly.

When to Use Temperature Conversions

  • Reading weather forecasts when traveling — European forecasts use Celsius, US forecasts use Fahrenheit.
  • Following cooking recipes from other countries. A UK recipe calling for 180 °C equals 356 °F (typically rounded to 350 °F).
  • Setting medical fever thresholds: 37 °C = 98.6 °F (normal), 38 °C = 100.4 °F (fever).
  • Scientific work requiring Kelvin, where 0 K is absolute zero (−273.15 °C), the lowest theoretically possible temperature.

Common Temperature Conversion Mistakes

  • 1Trying to convert temperature by simple multiplication. Unlike length or weight, temperature requires both multiplying and adding/subtracting.
  • 2Assuming "double the Celsius to get Fahrenheit" works beyond rough estimates. 20 °C is 68 °F, not 40 °F.
  • 3Confusing Celsius and Fahrenheit in oven settings. A recipe at 350 °F requires about 175 °C — setting your oven to 350 °C (662 °F) will burn food instantly.
  • 4Using Celsius/Fahrenheit in scientific contexts that require Kelvin. Gas law calculations (PV = nRT) only work with absolute temperature.

Practical Temperature Examples

Room temperature: 20–22 °C = 68–72 °F. Comfortable for most people indoors.
Boiling water: 100 °C = 212 °F at sea level. At high altitude (e.g., Denver at 1,600 m), water boils at about 95 °C (203 °F).
Body temperature: 36.1–37.2 °C (97–99 °F) is normal. Above 38 °C (100.4 °F) is considered a fever.
